Medico della Peste
In the 17th century, it was believed that these bird-like masks were able to protect people from airborne diseases by filling with sweet, strong smelling herbs. It was thought that these herbs and the mask were able to keep away bad smells which were the cause of disease. They would also wear brimmed hats, boots and gloves for protection.
Sheila is our perfect Plague Doctor model. She is the definition of patience. She sat with this mask on while we set up for the shot including adding the scarf, setting the lights and the camera. She is always up for these kinds of complicated pictures. We’ve used fans, put pants on her, had her sit pretty, balance on a step… you name it this little girl has done it.
